I have been reworking a collection of images I made at Steung Meanchey dump at the beginning of the year. The dump serves the capital city of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Invited to visit with a charity I’d previously shot for, they were giving out food and some basic medical supplies to the people who call the shanty town, that surrounds the new gold topped walls of the dump, home. I got the opportunity to explore, ankle deep in fetid water at times, and met some of the proud people that live and work with the booming cities rubbish.
Having been fiddling with some new editing techniques for practice I wasn’t going to upload the last one but I had made a private promise to try to help someone. The woman in the last photograph at the bottom, sat on the rickety wooden stairs to her one roomed shack, where seven of her family sleep, had gently pulled me by the arm.
‘Help.’ she said. Pointing at her home.
I didn’t know how. I took her photograph.
Editing just today I noticed how she has found some old grey net curtains to hang at the front of her door.
If you have any ideas of how to help my friend at the dump we should get together.
